Early Life and Bodybuilding Career
Franco Columbu was born in Ollolai, Sardinia, Italy, on August 7, 1941. As a young boy, he developed a strong interest in sports and began lifting weights at the age of 14. By the time he was 18, he had won the Mr. Sardinia bodybuilding title.
In 1965, Columbu emigrated to the United States and settled in California. He quickly became involved in the bodybuilding scene and soon caught the attention of Arnold Schwarzenegger. The two became close friends and training partners.
Columbu competed in his first Mr. Olympia contest in 1971 and finished in sixth place. He continued to compete in the Mr. Olympia for the next several years, placing in the top five each time. In 1976, he finally achieved his dream of winning the Mr. Olympia title.
Family Background
Columbu is married to Deborah Columbu and has two children, Maria and Franco Jr. He is also a close friend of Arnold Schwarzenegger and his family.
