Gunter Schlierkamp was born on October 22, 1963, in Cologne, Germany. He began training with weights at the age of 16, and quickly developed a passion for bodybuilding. In 1987, he won the German National Bodybuilding Championships, and went on to compete in the Mr. Olympia competition for the first time in 1988.

Schlierkamp finished in the top five at the Mr. Olympia competition for several years, but it was not until 1994 that he finally won the title. He repeated as champion in 1995, and became the first German bodybuilder to win the Mr. Olympia title.

Schlierkamp retired from competitive bodybuilding in 1997, and has since focused on his business interests. He is the owner of several fitness centers and supplements companies, and is also a successful author and motivational speaker.
