Mel Chancey was born on January 23, 1975, in Mississippi. He grew up on a farm and began lifting weights at a young age. In high school, he excelled in football and track and field. After graduating from high school, he attended Mississippi State University, where he continued to play football and lift weights. In 1998, he won the NPC Junior Nationals and turned pro.
