Johnny Stewart was born on March 23, 1960, in Baltimore, Maryland. He began weightlifting at the age of 16, and quickly developed a passion for the sport. Stewart competed in his first bodybuilding competition in 1981, and within a few years, he had become one of the top amateur bodybuilders in the United States.

In 1986, Stewart turned professional and began competing in the IFBB. He quickly rose through the ranks, and in 1990, he won the Mr. Olympia competition. Stewart continued to compete for several more years, but he never again won the Mr. Olympia title. He retired from bodybuilding in 1994.

Stewart is married and has two children. He currently lives in California.
