Ion Oncescu was born on April 25, 1978, in Bucharest, Romania. He began weightlifting at the age of 16 and quickly rose through the ranks of the sport. In 1970, he won the Romanian National Bodybuilding Championships, and in 1971, he won the IFBB Mr. Europe title.

Oncescu made his international debut at the 1972 Mr. Olympia competition, where he placed 10th. However, he quickly improved, and in 1977, he won his first Mr. Olympia title. He successfully defended his title the following year and also won the IFBB Mr. Universe title in 1978 and 1979.

Oncescu retired from competitive bodybuilding in 1980, but he continued to lift weights and train other bodybuilders. He is considered one of the greatest bodybuilders of all time, and his legacy continues to inspire new generations of athletes.
