In 1994, he won the NPC USA Championships, and in 1996, he won the IFBB World Amateur Championships.

Richardson turned professional in 1997, and quickly made a name for himself as one of the top bodybuilders in the world. He won the Mr. Olympia competition in 2002, and was also the runner-up in 2003 and 2004.
