Ronnie Coleman was born on May 13, 1964, in Monroe, Louisiana. He grew up in Bastrop. He was a natural athlete.

He played football, baseball, and basketball in high school. He was strong. He was fast. He was competitive.

He went to Grambling State University. He studied accounting. He graduated in 1984. He became a police officer in Arlington, Texas.

His fellow officers suggested he try bodybuilding. He joined Metroflex Gym. The owner, Brian Dobson, offered him a free membership if he competed.

Coleman said yes. He started training seriously. He had incredible genetics. His muscles grew fast.

In 1991, he won the Texas State Championships. In 1995, he won the Canada Pro Cup. He turned pro.

In 1998, he won his first Mr. Olympia. He beat Dorian Yates. It was the start of a legendary run.

The Middle: 8x Mr. Olympia 👑

From 1998 to 2005, Ronnie Coleman won Mr. Olympia 8 times in a row. No one has matched that streak except Lee Haney.

He was known as “The King.” His back was massive. His legs were huge. His conditioning was unmatched.

He trained with insane intensity. He squatted 800 pounds. He deadlifted 800 pounds. He said his famous catchphrase: “Yeah buddy! Light weight baby!”

Like Kai Greene, Coleman came from humble beginnings. Like Phil Heath, he dominated the Olympia stage for years.

But the heavy lifting took a toll. His back and hips were damaged. He had herniated discs. He kept competing anyway.

In 2006, he lost to Jay Cutler. It was his last Olympia. He retired from competition.

He continued to train. He continued to lift heavy. His body was breaking down, but his mind wouldn’t quit.
