Randy Orton, born Randal Orton on April 1, 1980, in Knoxville, Tennessee, is the eldest of three children in his family. His upbringing in a wrestling family significantly influenced his career path. 

His mother, Elaine, worked as a nurse, while his father, Bob Orton Jr., was a professional wrestler. 

Despite his parents’ reservations about the demanding lifestyle of a professional wrestler, including long periods away from home and constant travel, Orton was drawn to the sport from an early age.

Randy Orton made his professional wrestling debut in 2001 with the Mid-Missouri Wrestling Association-Southern Illinois Conference Wrestling (MMWA-SICW).

In 2002, Orton signed a contract with WWE (formerly known as the World Wrestling Federation, or WWF) and was sent to Louisville, Kentucky, to continue his training.

His performances in OVW earned him opportunities to appear on WWE house shows starting in May 2001, where he began to build a reputation through tag team matches against competitors like Chuck Palumbo, Shawn Stasiak, and Steven Richards.

Orton’s first significant WWE appearance came on March 16, 2002, at WrestleMania X8’s Fan Axxess, although he suffered a loss to Tommy Dreamer. 

His first televised match occurred on April 25, 2002, where he secured a victory over Hardcore Holly. This win marked the beginning of Orton’s rise as a fan favorite in WWE.

However, Orton’s early momentum faced a setback when he sustained a shoulder injury, which sidelined him for several months. 

During his recovery, he appeared on the “Randy News Network,” a segment that aired between other Raw segments.

This time of absence from the ring contributed to a shift in his persona, transforming him into a narcissistic villain in the WWE storyline.

Upon his return, Orton adopted the persona of “The Legend Killer,” a character that portrayed him as a young, brash wrestler challenging and insulting veteran wrestlers. 

This gimmick allowed Orton to engage in high-profile feuds, including a notable rivalry with Shawn Michaels. 

It was during this period that Orton developed his signature move, the “RKO” (Randy Keith Orton), a jumping cutter maneuver that became one of his trademarks.

In December 2003, Orton achieved a major milestone by winning the Intercontinental Championship from Rob Van Dam at Armageddon. 

He held the title for an impressive 210 days, the longest reign in seven years until he lost it to Edge in July 2004. This period solidified Orton’s status as a rising star in WWE.

Following his Intercontinental Championship reign, Orton quickly ascended the ranks to become a top contender for the World Heavyweight Championship. 

At just 24 years old, he made history as the youngest World Champion in WWE history by defeating Chris Benoit.
