Every generation of Spanish football produces a winger the rest of the world cannot ignore. In 2023 it was a skinny 15-year-old from Rocafonda, pulled off the bench against Real Betis with four minutes to play. At 19, Lamine Yamal is a World Cup winner, La Liga’s reigning Player of the Season, and one of the favourites for the Ballon d’Or — announced in London on October 26. The only question left: can the teenager actually win it?
Then: The 15-Year-Old Who Shook Barcelona
Lamine Yamal Nasraoui Ebana was born on July 13, 2007, in Esplugues de Llobregat and raised in Rocafonda, a working-class neighbourhood of Mataró. He joined Barcelona’s La Masia academy at seven, and Xavi Hernández was already calling him into first-team training while Yamal was still playing under-19 football — and still finishing compulsory school.
On April 29, 2023, against Real Betis, Yamal came on for Gavi wearing No. 41. Aged 15 years, 9 months and 16 days, he became the youngest player ever to appear for Barcelona in La Liga. The records fell in a rush that autumn: the youngest starter in La Liga history at 16 years and 38 days, the youngest goalscorer in La Liga history against Granada, and the youngest starter in Champions League history against Porto at 16 years and 83 days. Five months after his club debut, he debuted for Spain in a 7–1 win over Georgia — and scored, becoming Spain’s youngest debutant and goalscorer.

The Middle: The Euros, the Treble and the No. 10
Euro 2024 turned a domestic phenomenon into a global one. Yamal became the youngest player ever to feature at a European Championship, then broke Pelé’s 1958 record as the youngest player to appear in a major-tournament semifinal. His curling 25-yard strike against France in that semifinal made him the youngest scorer in Euros history at 16 years and 362 days — later voted Goal of the Tournament. One day after turning 17, he assisted Nico Williams’ opener as Spain beat England 2–1 in the final. He left Germany with the Young Player of the Tournament award, a place in the Team of the Tournament, and reportedly finished his schoolwork online between training sessions.
The 2024–25 season was the masterpiece: 18 goals and 25 assists in 55 games, a domestic treble (La Liga, Copa del Rey, Supercopa), and the inheritance of Barcelona’s No. 10 shirt. He finished runner-up in the 2025 Ballon d’Or behind Ousmane Dembélé and collected a second straight Kopa Trophy. On May 27, 2025, Barcelona tied him to the club until June 30, 2031 — sporting director Deco called the renewal the best signing the club had made in years.
Now: World Champion and Ballon d’Or Front-Runner
The 2025–26 season brought the coronation Barcelona’s fans had been waiting for. Yamal was named La Liga Player of the Season after 16 goals and 11 assists — no player in the league set up more goals — and shared the Zarra Trophy with Ferran Torres. Across all competitions he finished with 24 goals and 18 assists in 45 games as Barcelona retained the league title. Then came the summer: a World Cup winner with Spain, featuring in all eight matches as La Roja beat Argentina in the final on July 19, 2026.
Now the sport waits on October 26, when the Ballon d’Or gala takes place in London. Voting has closed, and the endorsements tell the story: Zlatan Ibrahimović picked Yamal outright — “He is my guy” — and Troy Deeney said the 19-year-old has “completed football” after winning the Euros and the World Cup. Thierry Henry backs Kylian Mbappé instead, pointing at 25 La Liga goals, 15 in the Champions League and a second straight World Cup Golden Boot. Yamal, for his part, refused to campaign: “I don’t think I need to run a campaign. I’m proud of the year I had, winning the World Cup and LaLiga.” The evaluation period ended in July — so his flying start to the new season won’t count. Whether a teenager’s two-trophy year beats Mbappé’s individual numbers is the defining question of the 2026 race.
Lamine Yamal’s then-and-now is not a story of transformation — it’s a story of acceleration. The boy who debuted at 15 is, at 19, a European champion, a World Cup champion, a treble winner, a two-time Kopa Trophy holder and La Liga’s Player of the Season. The only blank line on the résumé is the Ballon d’Or. On October 26, that may change — and if it doesn’t, the kid from Rocafonda has another decade of chances.
