Joey Sullivan was born on December 27, 1980, in San Diego, California. He began lifting weights at the age of 15 and quickly developed a passion for bodybuilding. By the age of 18, he had won his first bodybuilding competition.

Sullivan continued to compete in bodybuilding throughout his early 20s, winning several more competitions. In 2004, he turned professional and began competing in the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB).

Sullivan has competed in the Mr. Olympia competition, the most prestigious bodybuilding competition in the world, several times. His best finish was fifth place in 2012.
