Hugh Ross was born in 1960 in Scotland. He began weight training at the age of 14, and by the time he was 18, he had won the Mr. Scotland title. Ross turned professional in 1984, and quickly became one of the top bodybuilders in the world. He won the Mr. Olympia title three times, in 1985, 1986, and 1987, and he also won the Arnold Classic in 1986.

Ross retired from bodybuilding in 1991, but he has remained active in the sport as a coach and commentator. He is also the author of several books on bodybuilding and fitness.
