Vasiliy Ivanovich Alekseyev was born on 7th January 1942, in Ryazan Oblast, Russia. He was a Soviet weightlifter who competed in the super-heavyweight class. He was a two-time Olympic champion (1972 and 1976), a seven-time world champion (1970–77), and an eight-time European champion (1970–77). Alekseyev set 80 world records during his career, including 51 in the snatch, 21 in the clean and jerk, and 8 in the total.

Alekseyev was born in the village of Pochinki, Ryazan Oblast, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. He began weightlifting at the age of 15 and quickly rose through the ranks. In 1966, he won his first national championship and in 1970 he won his first world championship. Alekseyev’s greatest triumph came at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, where he won the gold medal in the super-heavyweight class with a world record total of 640 kg (1,411 lb). He repeated his Olympic victory in 1976 and retired from competition in 1977.

Alekseyev was a dominant force in weightlifting throughout the 1970s. He was known for his incredible strength and his ability to lift weights that were far beyond the reach of his competitors. Alekseyev was also a highly respected figure in the sport and was often referred to as the “Father of Soviet Weightlifting.” After retiring from competition, Alekseyev worked as a coach and administrator and continued to be involved in weightlifting.

Alekseyev was married to Larisa Alekseyev and they had two children, a son, Sergey, and a daughter, Natalya. He died on November 17, 2011, at the age of 69, from a heart attack.
