In 2004, Tobi Lütke, along with his partners Daniel Weinand and Scott Lake, founded an online snowboard shop called Snowdevil. 

Lütke, with his expertise in programming, developed a custom e-commerce platform for Snowdevil using the Ruby on Rails framework. 

This innovation laid the groundwork for what would become Shopify. 

Recognizing the potential of the e-commerce platform itself, the Snowdevil founders soon pivoted their focus away from snowboards and officially launched Shopify in 2006 as a platform for businesses to create their own online stores. Shopify quickly gained traction, and by 2015, the company went public.

In 2021, he followed this with a $1,200,001 donation to Team Seas, again invoking The Lorax, but humorously adding “but wet” to reference the ocean cleanup initiative.

Beyond Shopify, Lütke has been active in supporting other ventures.
