In 1990, he moved to the United States to pursue his bodybuilding career. He quickly rose through the ranks, and in 1994, he won the NPC National Bodybuilding Championships. This victory earned him his IFBB Pro Card, and he began competing in professional bodybuilding competitions. In 1996, he won the Arnold Classic, and in 1997, he won the Mr. Olympia title, becoming the first black man to win the prestigious competition. Dunbar retired from professional bodybuilding in 2001, but he continues to train and compete in masters competitions.
