Doha Then

Doha, the capital city of Qatar, is situated on the eastern coast of the Qatar Peninsula, along the shores of the Persian Gulf. 

The city’s name, “Doha,” is derived from the Arabic word dohat, meaning “roundness.” 

This refers to the rounded shape of the bays that characterize the coastline around the city. 

These natural features not only gave Doha its name but also helped shape the city’s early development as a trading and fishing hub. 

Over time, Doha has transformed into a modern metropolis, with impressive skyscrapers, cultural landmarks, and a thriving economy, while still retaining its connection to its coastal roots.

Doha History

The history of Doha is deeply intertwined with the development of Qatar itself. Initially, Doha was founded in the 1820s when the settlement of Al Bidda, which had been referenced as early as 1681, was in decline due to British military interventions aimed at curbing piracy. 

The city grew rapidly from its origins as a small trading port, becoming the capital of Qatar following its independence in 1971.

The first major settlement in the region was Al Bidda, a fortified town described in records from the 17th century, which later became a target of British military action due to its involvement in piracy. 

By the 19th century, Doha began to emerge as a more prominent settlement when it was founded by Buhur bin Jubrun, a member of the Al-Buainain tribe.

The area struggled under tribal conflicts and external pressures from powers such as the British and Ottomans.

The early 20th century saw the beginning of economic change with the advent of the pearling trade, which brought economic prosperity to Doha. 

However, the collapse of the pearl market in 1939 led to economic stagnation until oil was discovered in the 1930s, which eventually brought significant wealth to the region.

With newfound wealth, Doha began its modernization in the mid-20th century, with the construction of roads, schools, and modern buildings. 

By the 1970s, the population of Doha surged as the country began to exploit its oil resources.

The 21st century saw the construction of major projects such as Education City, the Pearl-Qatar, and the Aspire Zone, marking Doha’s emergence as a global city.

Today, Doha is known for its blend of modern architecture and rich cultural heritage, having hosted major international events such as the Asian Games, FIFA World Cup 2022, and numerous global summits. 

The city’s growth continues with large-scale urban development and cultural preservation projects aimed at making Doha a leading global destination in business, education, and tourism.

Doha Now

Doha, the capital city of Qatar, is a dynamic urban center and the country’s primary financial hub. 

Strategically located along the eastern coast of Qatar on the Persian Gulf, it is the largest city in the nation, with over 80% of the country’s population residing in Doha or its surrounding metropolitan area. 

This rapid urban growth has turned Doha into a global city, with modern infrastructure and an expanding skyline dominated by luxury hotels, office buildings, and residential complexes.

Some of these events include the 2006 Asian Games, the 2011 Pan Arab Games, and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which was a landmark event for Qatar. It is also set to host the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Beyond sports, Doha has also been a hub for diplomatic and environmental discussions.

In terms of safety, Doha ranks as one of the safest cities in the world. According to the Numbeo Crime Index, it was named the second safest city globally in 2021.
