Leroy Colbert was born in 1957 in Brooklyn, New York. He began lifting weights at the age of 15, and by the time he was 18, he was competing in bodybuilding competitions. Colbert quickly rose through the ranks of the amateur bodybuilding world, and in 1980, he turned professional.
Colbert’s professional bodybuilding career spanned the 1980s and 1990s. Colbert never won the Mr. Olympia, but he did place in the top 10 several times. He also won the Arnold Classic in 1993.
Colbert’s signature move was the ‘Colbert squat.’ This unique exercise involves squatting down with a barbell on the back of the neck, then raising up onto the toes and holding the position for a few seconds.
