Chris Urmson, born in 1976 in Canada to English immigrant parents, grew up in a diverse range of environments across Canada due to his father’s career in the Correctional Service of Canada, where his father eventually became the warden of the Kent Institution. 

Urmson’s early life saw him living in several cities, including Trenton, Ontario; Victoria, British Columbia; and Winnipeg, before finally settling in Saskatoon. 

These formative years likely exposed Urmson to a variety of perspectives and challenges, which would later influence his work in the field of robotics and autonomous vehicles.

Urmson pursued higher education with a focus on computer engineering, earning his BSc from the University of Manitoba in 1998. 

His academic journey continued as he pursued a PhD in robotics at Carnegie Mellon University, a renowned institution for advanced research in this field. He completed his PhD in 2005 with a thesis titled “Navigation Regimes for Off-Road Autonomy.” 

This work was foundational in developing systems that allow autonomous vehicles to navigate challenging, unstructured environments, which later played a crucial role in the development of self-driving car technology.

His educational background and early experiences positioned him as a leading figure in the autonomous vehicle industry, particularly in his later roles at Google’s self-driving car project and as CEO of Aurora Innovation, a company focused on developing self-driving technology for a safer, more efficient future.

Chris Urmson Business Career

Chris Urmson’s career in robotics and autonomous vehicles has been marked by groundbreaking contributions, starting with his tenure as a faculty member at the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). 

His research focused on motion planning and perception for robotic vehicles, essential elements for developing autonomous systems. 

Urmson played a pivotal role in CMU’s participation in the DARPA Grand Challenges, a series of competitions organized by the U.S. Department of Defense to spur the development of autonomous vehicles. 

As the technical director for CMU’s teams, he helped develop Sandstorm, a converted Humvee that led the field in the 2004 Grand Challenge, although no team completed the race.

In the following year, CMU’s robotic vehicles Sandstorm and H1ghlander secured second and third places in the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge, further solidifying Urmson’s leadership in the field. 

In the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge, CMU’s Chevy Tahoe, known as “Boss,” won the competition, demonstrating advanced autonomous navigation in urban environments. 

This victory placed Urmson at the forefront of the autonomous vehicle revolution.

Following his success with DARPA, Urmson was recruited by Google in 2009 to lead their self-driving car project, where he initially served as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of what would become the company’s autonomous driving team.

In 2013, he took over leadership from Sebastian Thrun and oversaw the project as it transitioned from experimental research to extensive road testing. 

During Urmson’s time at Google, the company’s self-driving cars logged an impressive 1.8 million miles of test driving. 

His contributions to the project, including the development of key software powering Google’s autonomous systems, helped propel the self-driving car industry forward. 

However, in 2016, Urmson decided to leave Google to explore new opportunities in the growing field of autonomous driving.

In 2017, Chris Urmson co-founded Aurora Innovation alongside Sterling Anderson, the former director of Tesla’s Autopilot program, and Drew Bagnell, who had led autonomy and perception at Uber. 

Aurora set out to build the software, data, and hardware necessary to enable autonomous driving, but with a strategic focus on collaborating with vehicle manufacturers rather than producing cars themselves. 

Aurora developed the “Aurora Driver,” an advanced platform that integrates machine learning into the perception and motion planning systems for vehicles, making it adaptable for both passenger and commercial applications. 

With significant backing from major investors like Amazon and Sequoia, Aurora quickly became a leader in the autonomous vehicle space.

Under Urmson’s leadership, Aurora has formed key partnerships with companies like Fiat Chrysler and Hyundai/Kia Motors, enabling further development of their autonomous driving technology. 

In 2019, Aurora expanded its capabilities by acquiring Blackmore, a company specializing in Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) lidar, which enhances the vehicles’ ability to detect and interpret their surroundings. 

The company has raised nearly $700 million in Series B financing, positioning it as a formidable player in the future of transportation.

In December 2020, Aurora made headlines when Uber invested $400 million in the company, effectively transferring Uber’s autonomous vehicle project to Aurora.

This move marked a shift in Aurora’s focus, as they began developing autonomous semi-trucks to improve logistics and long-haul transportation. 

By November 2021, Aurora went public through a merger with Reinvent Technology Partners Y, a Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC). 

This public offering marked a significant milestone, with Urmson becoming a billionaire due to his 145 million shares in the company. 

Today, Chris Urmson continues to lead Aurora Innovation as it works to revolutionize transportation through its cutting-edge autonomous driving technology.
