Nils van der Poel was born on April 25, 1996, in Trollhättan, Sweden. He began skating at the age of seven, and quickly rose through the ranks of the Swedish skating system. In 2014, he won the Swedish junior national championship in the 5000 meters. The following year, he made his World Cup debut, and finished 11th in the 5000 meters.

In 2016, van der Poel won his first World Cup medal, a bronze in the 5000 meters. He followed that up with a silver medal in the same event at the 2017 World Single Distances Championships. In 2018, he won his first World Cup gold medal in the 5000 meters, and finished fourth in the event at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Van der Poel’s family has been a major source of support throughout his career. His father, Göran, was a speed skater who competed in the 1980 Winter Olympics. His mother, Lena, is a former track and field athlete.
