Monte Saldo was born on July 25, 1960, in Brooklyn, New York. He began weightlifting at the age of 14 and quickly developed a passion for the sport. Saldo competed in his first bodybuilding competition in 1981 and won the Mr. New York State title. He went on to win the Mr. USA title in 1983 and the Mr. Olympia title in 1984.
