Károly Garamvölgyi was born on September 27, 1954, in Budapest, Hungary. He began lifting weights at the age of 16 and quickly developed a passion for bodybuilding. In 1976, he won the Mr. Hungary competition and went on to compete in the Mr. Universe competition in 1977. He placed second in that competition and won the Mr. Universe title in 1978 and 1979.

Garamvölgyi’s success in the Mr. Universe competition led him to the Mr. Olympia competition in 1980. He placed second in that competition and won the Mr. Olympia title in 1981 and 1983. Garamvölgyi retired from competitive bodybuilding in 1984.

Garamvölgyi married his wife, Éva, in 1980. They have two children, a son and a daughter.
