In 1975, Fuchs won the Mr. Universe title, becoming the first German to win the prestigious title. He went on to win the Mr. Olympia title in 1980, becoming the second German to win the title after Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Fuchs retired from competitive bodybuilding in 1984 and returned to Germany. He now lives in Bavaria with his wife and two children.
