Tom Wolf Then

Tom Wolf, born on November 17, 1948, in Mount Wolf, Pennsylvania, comes from a family with deep local roots, as his hometown is named after one of his ancestors who served as the town’s postmaster. 

He was raised in a Methodist household, which likely influenced his values and outlook on life. 

Tom’s educational journey began in local public schools, but he later transferred to The Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1967. 

His pursuit of higher education took him to Dartmouth College, where he majored in government and graduated magna cum laude in 1972. 

This early academic excellence laid the foundation for a remarkable career in both academia and public service.

After completing his undergraduate degree, Wolf joined the Peace Corps, spending over two years in India. 

This experience not only broadened his worldview but also deepened his commitment to public service and social justice. 

Upon returning to the United States, he continued his education, earning an M.Phil. from the University of London in 1978 and a Ph.D. in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1981. 

His dissertation focused on the United States House of Representatives and was recognized as the best of the year by the American Political Science Association, showcasing his academic prowess and analytical skills.

Despite his academic accomplishments and a potential career in academia—he turned down an opportunity to interview for a tenure-track position at Harvard—Wolf chose to embark on a different path.

He began his career at The Wolf Organization, taking on the role of manager at a True Value store owned by the family business.

Tom Wolf’s Political Career

After purchasing The Wolf Organization in 1985, he became actively involved in local economic development initiatives during Governor Robert P. Casey’s administration, serving on both an economic development board and the Pennsylvania Legislative Commission on Urban Schools. 

These roles highlighted his focus on improving the state’s economy and educational system, paving the way for his later political ambitions.

In 2006, Wolf sold his company to a private equity firm and was appointed by Governor Ed Rendell as Pennsylvania’s secretary of revenue, where he served until November 2008.

Though he initially planned to run for governor in the 2010 election, Wolf chose instead to repurchase The Wolf Organization, which was facing financial difficulties. 

His leadership at the company continued until he decided to focus on a gubernatorial campaign, illustrating his ability to navigate complex business challenges while remaining dedicated to public service.

In 2013, Wolf officially announced his candidacy for governor, pledging a significant personal investment in his campaign and outlining a vision for a “Fresh Start” for Pennsylvania.

His strategic use of television advertising and extensive grassroots campaigning positioned him as a frontrunner in the Democratic primary, where he ultimately secured the nomination against several competitors. 

Despite facing scrutiny over his associations and accusations of campaign missteps, he maintained a strong lead throughout the primary season and won the Democratic nomination in May 2014.

Wolf’s campaign for governor culminated in the November 2014 general election against incumbent Republican Governor Tom Corbett.

His victory was significant, marking him as the first challenger to unseat a sitting Pennsylvania governor since the state allowed for consecutive terms in 1968.

Upon taking office on January 20, 2015, Wolf chose to commute from his home in York instead of residing in the Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence, emphasizing his commitment to his roots and connection to the community.

His most impactful decision was the full expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, which provided health coverage to hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians, showcasing his dedication to improving healthcare access and addressing the needs of the state’s most vulnerable populations.

In 1975, Tom Wolf married Frances Donnelly, a talented oil painter whose artistic pursuits have complemented Wolf’s public service career. 

The couple has built a family together, raising two children in York, Pennsylvania, where they have been active members of their community.
