Bill Lee Then

Bill Lee, born on October 9, 1959, in Franklin, Tennessee, comes from a long line of Tennesseans, being a seventh-generation native of the state. 

He grew up on his family’s expansive 1,000-acre cattle farm, known as the Triple L Ranch, which was established by his grandparents. 

The ranch, primarily focused on raising Hereford cattle, has been an integral part of Lee’s upbringing and identity, deeply rooting him in the agricultural traditions of his family and the local community.

After completing his education at Franklin High School, Lee pursued a degree in mechanical engineering at Auburn University, graduating in 1981. 

His college years were marked by his involvement in the Kappa Alpha Order, a fraternity historically associated with the use of Confederate imagery. 

In 2019, a photograph from the university’s 1980 yearbook resurfaced, showing Lee in a Confederate military uniform during a fraternity event called the “Old South” party. 

Upon reflection, Lee acknowledged the insensitivity of his participation in such events, expressing regret and a newfound understanding of the implications of his actions. 

He stated, “I never intentionally acted in an insensitive way, but with the benefit of hindsight, I can see that participating in that was insensitive and I’ve come to regret it.”

Following his graduation, Lee took the helm of the family business, Lee Company, which specializes in home services and construction. 

He served as president and CEO from 1992 until 2016, demonstrating his leadership and commitment to both his family’s legacy and the economic development of his community.

Bill Lee’s political career began to take shape in April 2017 when he announced his candidacy for governor of Tennessee in the 2018 election.

In a crowded Republican primary that included notable candidates such as Congresswoman Diane Black, businessman Randy Boyd, and state House Speaker Beth Harwell, Lee initially faced skepticism about his chances of success.

On November 6, 2018, Lee secured a decisive victory, receiving 1,336,106 votes (59.6%) to Dean’s 864,863 (38.6%). 

This win marked a significant moment in Tennessee’s political history, as it was the first time since 1982 that a candidate from the incumbent U.S. President’s party was elected governor of Tennessee.

Additionally, it was a milestone for the Republican Party, as Lee became the first Republican to succeed another Republican governor in the state and helped the party achieve its third consecutive gubernatorial victory.

As he prepared for his first term, Lee was sworn in on January 19, 2019, and delivered his inaugural State of the State address in March.

In January 2020, he proposed one of the strictest abortion bans in the nation, aiming to prohibit the procedure as early as six weeks into pregnancy.

In September 2020, Lee announced his candidacy for reelection in the 2022 elections, during which he faced no challengers in the Republican primary.

In the general election held on November 8, 2022, Lee was reelected with 1,129,390 votes (64.9%) against Democratic nominee Jason Martin’s 572,818 votes (32.9%).

Bill Lee resides in Fernvale, Tennessee, with his second wife, Maria, whom he married in October 2008. 

His personal life has been shaped by both joy and tragedy; his first wife, Carol Ann, tragically passed away in a horseback riding accident in 2000. 

Following her death, Lee made the significant decision to take an extended leave from his construction company, prioritizing the upbringing of their four children during a challenging time.
